John Abeal was a merchant. As a younger man he had a relationship with a Seneca woman and fathered the great Seneca Chief known in Revolutionary War Records as Abeal's Son, but by the Iroquois as the "Cornplanter", John Abeal was taken prisoner in the August 2, 1780 Massacre, but was released safely by his son, Cornplanter (The Life of Mary Jeminson).
