From the Morning Union, Nevada City newspaper dated Dec. 9, 1917: "Wm. H. Murchie is Victim of Death - Well Known Pioneer Passed Away at Home on Red Dog Road Yesterday After Long Illness - At 11:30 o'clock yesterday morning, William H. Murchie, one of Nevada City's oldest and most highly esteemed pioneer residents, passed away at the family home on the Red Dog road. Mr. Murchie had been in failing health for several months and for many weeks had been confined to his bed, and his death was not unexpected, but the news will be received with regret by his many friends. William Murchie was born in St. Stephens, New Brunswick, on May 23, 1839, being aged 78 years, 6 months, and 10 days at the time of his death. His father, the late John C. Murchie, came to California from St. Stephens in 1849, being one of California's earliest pioneers, and his brother, the late John Murchie, arrived in this state in 1852. It was in 1855 that the deceased and other members of the family made the journey to California coming via the Isthmus of Panama. They arrived in San Francisco on Thanksgiving Day of that year and it was shortly afterwards that Mr. Murchie came to this city to take up his residence. He followed mining during the greater portion of his life and with his brothers was for a long time owner of the Murchie mine, which is located a short distance from the Murchie home on the Red Dog road. Mr. Murchie was always a man of the strictest integrity and was highly regarded by all who knew him. He is survived by a loving wife, Mary A. Murchie, and four sons and one daughter, who are as follows. Arthur E of Sparks, Nevada; Earl of Hammonton; Dr. Darrell H. of Marysville; Howard of Bakersfield and Miss Maude I. Murchie of San Jose. He also leaves one brother and three sisters who are as follows: James S. Murchie of Merced; Mrs. Nellie Martin of Osage City, Kansas; Mrs. Alice Haskins of Kansas City, Missouri; and Mrs. Maggie Gentry of Osage City, Kansas. The funeral will be held Tuesdsay afternoon at 2:30 o'clock from the Murchie home and interment will be made in Pine Grove cemetery."
