This man was our grandfather. I was not afforded the privilege of knowing him, as he died before I was born. He was known as "Gran" to his many grandchildren and I wish I had the opportunity to have called him, "Gran" as he rocked rhythmically in his favorite rocker on the front porch or carved a watermelon out in the yard on a hot summer day. Over the years, I have heard many stories about his integrity and character. I treasure the tales of kindness and caring for others that caused him to be highly respected. If a neighbor was ever in need, he could be depended on to lend a hand. He and his family resided in a farming community in central Mississippi in Neshoba County. He worked the land and was dependent on God to provide the means for his family. He and our grandmother had a total of 9 children over 23 years from 1900 - 1923, losing 1 in infancy. They raised 8 children to adulthood, teaching them respect, compassion, and love. He was a man devoted to his family.
