Katherine Eva O'Byrne was born on July 12, 1844, in Greenville, Illinois, the child of Patrick C. and Rosanna O'Byrne. She was married to Thomas Jefferson Hall on February 24, 1871, by John M. Ewell (Justice of the Peace) in Thurman. In Thurman, Thomas and Kate had eight children in the 15 years that they spent there together. Her beloved Thomas preceded her, young in life - at the age of 45, in 1889. Thereafter, as a widow, Kate raised her children without remarrying.
In her later years, she was living with her first born child (eldest daughter), Laura HALL Orr. It was in the home of her son-in-law, W. E. Orr, that she died on March 20, 1913, in Winner, South Dakota, at the age of 68. After her passing, at great expense her remains were returned to her husband's side and Kate was laid to rest in Thurman, Iowa in the Spring of 1913.
