"Honorable Joseph Mason Livermore, Republican, was chosen senator in 1858, Washington County being now entitled to two senators. He was son of Oliver S. and Sarah S. (Johnson) Livermore, born at Eastport Nov. 22, 1824. Mr. Livermore was engaged in commercial business at Eastport. For 19 years he served as moderator at the annual town meetings, and for 11 years was chairman of the board of selectman. His father and his son , Edward E. Livermore, present county attorney, have also served as selectmen. He was appointed surveyor of the port of Eastport by President Lincoln and held that position, with the exception of a short time, when the duties of the ofice was suspended, until his death which took place at Eastport Nov. 20, 1878." In the 1850 U.S. Census, custom house worker O.S. Livermore, 50, born Maine, was living in Eastport, Maine with Sarah f. 49; merchant Joseph M., 25; Ellen I., 22; gold digger Oliver S., 22; Mary N., 15; and Samuel L., 8, all born in Maine; Almira B. Coney, 40; Joseph S., 16; Margaret Camey, 20, born Ireland.

Joseph Livermore married Emma I Bucknam on March 7, 1847 in Eastport.

Joseph was the son of Oliver Shead Livermore and Sarah Swift Johnson.

Joseph was the grandson of his maternal grandparents, Edmund Johnson and Mary Richards Jones, and is a descendant of John Alden and Priscilla Mullins of the Mayflower. His line of descent is through his maternal grandmother, Mary, as follows:
