Auto-Train Crash Kills 3 Youths Near Denmark
DENMARK, July 7. - Two Denmark youths and a girl visitor from Fort Lawn were killed yesterday morning in the collision of their automobile and a speeding diesel-engine train of the Seaboard railroad, three miles north of here.
Driver of the car was identified as Dewis Kelley Blume, 17, who was instantly killed; passengers were, Miss Alice Jeanne Pearce, 17, of Fort Lawn, formerly of Charleston, who died en route to a hospital, and Clyde Buford Harris, 19, who died in a Columbia hospital yesterday afternoon.
Coroner L. H. Morris said the accident happened at 3:05 a.m. The group had been attending a house-party and dance at the Denmark country club, he said, and the youths were taking Miss Pearce to the home of her grandparents, Mr. and Mrs. G. M. Pearce, when the collision occurred.
Force of the collision was so great, Coroner Morris said, that the car was hurled through the air 35 feet before it hit the ground. The rear end was torn loose and was found in a swamp 50 feet from the rest of the vehicle.
It is thought here that the group was on an unfamiliar detour, which has been established while the road from Denmark to the country club is being paved, and came on the railroad crossing unexpectedly.
Miss Pearce was a daughter of Mrs. Margaret McFadden Pearce of Fort Lawn and the late Eugene G. Pearce of Charleston.
It was the second time within a year that trragedy had struck the Pearce home. Last July, Miss Pearce's father was killed in a railroad accident near Charleston.
Miss Pearce, with her mother and sister, was visiting her grandparents. The party which the people had attended was given by her cousin, Miss Shirley Barker.
Funeral services for Miss Pearce were held at the Fort Lawn Methodist church this afternoon at 4 o'clock. Burial was in the Fort Lawn cemetery.
Miss Pearce was an outstanding freshman at Winthrop college and an honor graduate at the St. Andrew's parish high school near Charleston in the class of 1946. She was given the class general excellence award on graduation.
Surviving, besides her mother, are a sister, Miss Mary Ann Pearce, of Fort Lawn; a brother, Thomas George Pearce, of Fort Lawn; her paternal grandparents, Mr. and Mrs. G. M. Pearce, of Denmark; her maternal grandmother, Mrs. Mary G. McFadden , of Fort Lawn, and several aunts and uncles.
Young Harris finished the Denmark high school in May and since had been employed by the Seaboard Air Line railway. He was a member of the Denmark Baptist church.
Funeral arrangements are incomplete but services will be held some time Tuesday morning after the arrival of relatives.
Young Harris had lived in Denmark with his uncle and aunt, Mr. and Mrs. W. Q. Collins. His parents died when he was a child.
Surviving are five brothers, A. Y. Harris, Fred Harris, Roland Harris and Jessie Harris, all of Rutherfordton, N. C. and Hoyle Harris, of Columbia; three sisters, Miss Louise Harris, of Atlanta, Mrs. Raymond West, of Spindale, N. C., and Mrs. David Heffner, of Rutherfordton, N. C.; his grandparents, Mr. and Mrs. L. B. Harris of Rutherfordton, N. C.
Young Blume was an employee of the Davey Tree Expert company of Long Island, and was a member of the Denmark Baptist church.
Funeral services were held for him at 4 o'clock this afternoon at the home of his parents, Mr. and Mrs. B. L. Blume, the Rev. H. S. Sauls officiating. Burial was in the Denmark cemetery.
Besides his parents, surviving are four half-sisters, Mrs. James Odom and Mrs. Reuben Odom, both of Elko; Mrs. Roscoe Beard of Denmark; and Mrs. Leon Hartzog of Hilda; an adopted sister, Sandra Blume of Denmark; and a paternal grandmother, Mrs. William Blume of Denmark.
