HILLSBORO — Lucille Verena Meirowsky, 92, passed away Saturday (Aug. 7, 2010) at Parkside Homes in Hillsboro.
Lucille was born on Sept. 27, 1917, in Marion County to Leo Charles Winkley and Josephine Mary (Wegerer) Winkley.
She married Guy Vincent Meirowsky on Feb. 12, 1938, at Spring Branch Church in Marion County.
Lucille attended Finch Grade School in rural Marion County, graduating from Marion High School in 1935 and Kansas State Teachers College in Emporia.
She taught in the Marion County rural schools of Merry-Go-Round, Finch, Weaver and Nusbaum.
Upon consolidation of the one-room schools, Lucille taught at Peabody Elementary School for 26 1⁄2 years. She retired in 1984 after teaching for a total of 36 1⁄2 years.
As a teacher, Lucille expected much from her students while influencing the lives of many young minds.
One summer vacation during World War II, she worked at Boeing as a timekeeper for the production of the B-29 airplane.
Lucille was a member of St. Mary's Catholic Church and St. Mary's Altar Society in Newton.
Lucille was an active member of the NEA, KNEA, Peabody Teachers Organization, Marion County Retired Teachers, Peabody Township Library Board (12 years) and Sorosis Senior Club.
She was recognized as a "Kansas Outstanding Teacher," and her name was listed in the 1973 book of "Outstanding Teachers of America."
She is survived by a son, Maurice Meirowsky and wife Nancy of Peabody; a daughter, Jeanine Beauchamp and husband Anthony of Hutchinson; four grandchildren, Stephen Meirowsky, Kathy Holm and husband Jim of Wichita, Christopher Beauchamp and Marshall Beauchamp; and great-granddaughters, Bailey and Carly Holm.
Lucille was preceded in death by her husband, Guy in 1986; and her parents, Leo and Josephine Winkley.
Visitation will be from 1 to 9 p.m. Thursday, with the family receiving friends from 6:30 to 8 p.m. at Petersen Funeral Home in Newton.
Recitation of the Holy Rosary will be at 10 a.m. Friday at St. Mary's Catholic Church in Newton.
Mass of the Christian burial will follow at 10:30 a.m. Friday at St. Mary's Catholic Church, with the Rev. Jim Mainzer officiating.
Graveside service will follow at St. Mary's Cemetery.
