Henry W. Shonk was born in Butler County, Ohio, July 22, 1838. His father moved the family to Illinois and settled on the farm that Henry died on.
Here he grew to manhood and in 1862 entered his countries service as a private in Company F, 79th Illinois Volunteers. At the close of the war he was mustered out with his regiment and came home and went to work on the farm.
In 1866 he was married to Miss. Mary Brosman. Ten children have been born to them, seven of who, three boys and four girls, with their mother, survive the husband and father.
