Sister was born in Stratford, WI on February 12, 1918, the second of twelve children of Edward and Bertha Harter Becher. Sister entered the Congregation of Saint Agnes from her home parish of Saint Joseph in Stratford, WI in 1932 and professed her vows on August 15, 1937.
That year Sister Marita began her ministry as a primary teacher in Yonkers, New York. In all, she taught 49 years, teaching in New York, Wisconsin, Kansas, Indiana, and Illinois. After retiring from the classroom Sister spent the next nine years helping in the libraries at St. Mary in Oshkosh and at FACES in Fond du Lac. Reflecting back over her years in education Sister shared how she loved children and enjoyed working with them and leading them to God through Catholic Education. In her retirement years Sister enjoyed volunteering at Agnesian Adult Day Services and serving as sacristan at the Boyle Apostolic Center. Throughout her life Sister Marita served as the family historian for the Becher/Harter family.
Survivors include two sisters, Mary Werner of Marshfield, WI and Jeanette Schuster of Payson, AZ; five brothers, Thomas (Virginia) Becher of Franklin, WI, Walter (Elaine) Becher of Stratford, WI, Roman (Lorraine) Becher of Santa Clara, CA, Al (Bertie) Becher of Stratford, WI, and Phillip Becher of Winona, MN; one brother-in-law Sylvan Spiegelberg; nieces, nephews, cousins and members of the Congregation of Saint Agnes with whom she lived and ministered.
Sister was preceded in death by three sisters, Joan Spiegelberg, Magdalen Bowen, and Florence Theurer and by her brother Leo Becher.
Services: A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 2:15 PM on Tuesday, January 9, 2007 at St. Francis Home Chapel, 33 Everett St. in Fond du Lac. The Rev. Edward Sippel will be the celebrant. Burial will follow the Mass and will be at St. Joseph Springs Cemetery in Fond du Lac.
Visitation: Visitation will be held at Nazareth Court, 375 Gillett St. in Fond du Lac from 9:00 AM to the time of the Mass. A prayer service will be held at 1:00 PM.
Memorials may be directed to the Sisters of St. Agnes Development Office.
