Funeral services for Leslie Freie will be held 10:30 a.m. today at St. Paul Lutheran Church in Latimer with Pastor Marvin Lorenz officiating. Burial will take place at St. Paul Lutheran Cemetery in Latimer.
Visitation was held from 5 until 8 p.m. Tuesday, Oct. 18, at St. Paul Lutheran Church, 304 W. Main St. in Latimer, with a family prayer service. There will be additional visitation one hour prior to services today at the church.
Leslie, the son of Henry W. and Carrie Hopkey Freie, was born Oct. 9, 1904, in Richland Township in Franklin County. On Nov. 20, 1904, Leslie was baptized at St. Paul Lutheran Church. He was raised and educated in the Latimer area. He attended country school through the sixth grade and then rode a horse to Latimer to complete two years of confirmation school. Leslie then went back to country school to complete eight years there.
On Feb. 28, 1926, Leslie was married to Laura Hovey in Sheffield, Iowa. The couple made their home in the Latimer area, where they farmed and raised their family.
Leslie enjoyed camping and pulled the camper to Texas for many years, where the couple would spend the winter. He enjoyed carpentry and upholstery work and built many things for his grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
Leslie was a member of St. Paul Lutheran Church for 101 years where he served on the church council and held various other offices. He was a Farm Bureau member for 79 years.
Leslie is survived by four children: Norma DeBour Casperson of Latimer, Verne Freie and wife, Elaine, of Newhall, Evonne Plagge and husband, Wayne, of Latimer, Glenn Freie and wife, Jeanette, of Latimer; 13 grandchildren; 33 great-grandchildren; 17 great-great grandchildren; a brother-in-law, Robert Hovey and his wife, Lois, of Hampton; and numerous nieces, nephews and friends.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Henry and Carrie (Hopkey) Freie; wife Laura; one sister, Erma Pralle; two grandchildren, Linn and Sara DeBour; sons-in-law, Lloyd DeBour and Everett Casperson; and two grandsons-in-law, Allen Nieland and Max Rodemeyer.
