Millard Cicero Coffey was the eldest of nine children born to William M. Coffey (1855-1932) and Martha Jane Sharpe (1855-1935). He was born on a farm in the upper Yadkin Valley of Caldwell Co., but the family moved to Lincolnton in Lincoln Co., NC where William Coffey found work as an overseer in a cotton mill. Millard followed his father as a mill worker in Lincolnton. Around 1898 Millard married Mabel Frances "Fannie" Davis (1878-1969), daughter of Michael H. Davis and Clara Jane Lutz Davis of Lincolnton. The couple had four children: Caroline Persell (b. ca. 1905), Michael L. (b. ca. 1909), Clinard Yates (b. 1910), and Millard Reeves (b. 1918). Millard died from a cerebral hemorrhage at the age of 82.
