Rutha Ester Coffey was the youngest of nine children born to William M. Coffey (1855-1932) and Martha Jane Sharpe (1855-1935). She was born after her family moved from Caldwell Co., N.C. to Lincolnton in Lincoln Co., where her father worked in a cotton mill. She also worked in the mills. She died of a heart attack at the age of seventy-four. She never married.
