From the Belfast (Northern Ireland) Newsletter, 09 Feb 1830:
“SIR JOHN MAGINNESS [sic] – It is our painful duty to announce the death of our excellent Fellow-Citizen, Sir JOHN MAGINNESS, M.D. and member of the Royal College of Surgeons, Dublin. After a long protracted illness, he breathed his last on the 30th ult. He was an upright magistrate, an affectionate husband, a kind father, and a steady friend. He was a native of this city, where he was long known as an eminent Physician. In this capacity he endeared himself to every individual who had recourse to his assistance; combining the tenderness and sympathy of a friend with the skillful treatment of the medical profession. Until want of heath prevented him, he held the appointment of Surgeon of the Jail and Infirmary of this city and county. He served the offices of Chief Magistrate in the years 1821 and 1822. In the former year he headed the deputation of the Corporation who waited on their Sovereign on his visit to Ireland, at which time his Majesty, in compliment to the city, was graciously pleased to confer on him the honour of Knighthood. Sir John died in the 58th year of his age, deeply regretted by a large circle of relative and friends.” Reprinted from the Derry Journal.
