Sarah Penfield was the oldest daughter of Sgt. John Penfield and Eunice Ogden. She was one of 10 children from this family.

On September 1, 1791 she wed Philo Stewart, (son of Alexander Stewart and Sarah Bogue) He was co-founder of Oberlin College where many Penfields have attended.

They had 6 children:
*Sarah Ann (1808- )
*Stewart ( 1791-1814)
*Elizabeth Betsy Stewart(1794-1874)
*Allen Stewart (1795-1814)
*Philo Penfield Stewart Jr (1798-1868)
*Amasa Stewart (1802-1884)

After Philo's death in 1812, Sarah married on September 9, 1815, Col. Thomas Hammond, (son of Daniel Hammond and Lucy Jones). He had a very illustrious career in the military as well as politics.
She was again widowed but died five years after Thomas's death.
