CLEARWATER - Glen W. Vantrease, director of fiscal affairs for the Pinellas County Sheriff's Department, died Monday at Morton Plant Hospital after a lengthy illness. He was 66.
Mr. Vantrease, of 80 Rogers St. in Clearwater, became Sheriff Gerry Coleman's chief financial officer in February 1981.
''He was more than an excellent employee and friend,'' said Coleman. ''There are no words to describe him. He was the best of the best. He was a gentleman.''
Mr. Vantrease set up the data processing system for the sheriff's fiscal affairs department, established internal auditing procedures and handled investments of department funds.
''He had many accomplishments, mainly fiscal investments. He generated millions of dollars in interest for the county,'' Coleman said.
Formerly a financial officer for the city of Gary, Ind., Mr. Vantrease came to Pinellas County in 1970. From 1974 to 1977, he was fiscal services chief for the county's grants development department.
In 1977, he became chief deputy county clerk and served as the county's auditor. He was an unsuccessful Democratic candidate for circuit court clerk in 1980 before joining the Sheriff's Department.
Born in Lebanon, Tenn., Mr. Vantrease was an Army veteran of World War II and served in the 82nd Airborne Division from 1942-46. He was awarded the Bronze Star, the Purple Heart and the Combat Infantryman's Badge.
He was a member of St. Paul's Lutheran Church, president of the Kiwanis Club of Clearwater and a life member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars. He also was a member of the Scottish Rite, Egypt Temple Shrine and the American Legion.
Survivors include his wife of 43 years, Gene L.; three sons, Dr. Richard J., Louisville, Ky., Thomas W., Fort Lauderdale, and Capt. John A., Abilene, Texas.; a daughter, Marilyn J. Wilder, Tampa; his mother, Carolyn Vantrease, Clearwater; and three grandchildren.
Visitation will be from 2 to 4 p.m. and 7 to 9 p.m. Wednesday at Rhodes & Wice Funeral Directors, Druid Chapel, Clearwater.
The funeral will be 11 a.m. Thursday at St. Paul's Lutheran Church, 407 S Saturn Ave. Burial will be at Sylvan Abbey Memorial Park.
