Belton Shaw Greenslade was born on January 24, 1880, in Houston, Mississippi. His father, Thomas, was 31 and his mother, Mary Ellen Shaw Greenslade, was 33. Shaw (as he was always called) was the seventh of 10 children. The family moved to Kaufman, Texas after the birth of the ninth child in 1882. His mother died giving birth to her last child. Shaw was five and his father remarried four months later. Shaw's stepmother, Sallie Matthews Greenslade, had two more children with his father.

Shaw married Lassie Jane Hurley on November 24, 1901, in Kaufman, Texas. They had ten children in 25 years. He died on October 5, 1951, in Houston, Texas, at the age of 71, and was buried there.
