Thank you so much to Classic, for making this memorial and then for transferring her to me. It is very appreciated!

Sister of Thomas Riley Kirk, Hugh Preston Kirk, Samuel L Kirk, Robert M Kirk, Wiley Clark Kirk and Francis M. Kirk.

From the Sacramento Daily Union, Monday, August 1st, 1859

On Saturday, the 25th of June, an affray occured at Grandville, Grundy county, Mo., in which George M. McAfee shot a man named Phipps, when Kirk, a brother-in-law of Phipps, drew a pistol and shot McAfee. Kirk immediately fled. The cause of the difficulty was not known. Phipps died on Tuesday night and McAfee was in a dying condition at last accounts.

GRANVILLE, Grundy County, Missouri
Granville, an old town, flourished in the eighteen fifties, very near the present site of Dunlap. It had a general and grocery store, whose principle trade was in whisky, and a blacksmith shop. Here occurred the killing of McAfee and Phipps, about 1858.

The purpose of this chapter is to make mention, briefly of a portion only of those tragic events which have sometime been of great moment to the communities in which they occurred. The record is not complete. The doings of the Heatherleys, Grundy County's first criminals, are matters of tradition rather than of record. We can only know that they were here and committed numerous depredations, horse stealing and pilfering, prior to 1837. In about 1859 there was a double killing at the town of Granville. In a quarrel McAfee shot Phipps and was in turn shot by Clark Kirk.

From eking1, Joseph's grave was washed away by the river it was beside. (I do not know where that was)
