Enlisted and mustered in on 22 December 1862 at Flint, Genesee County, Michigan, Company D, Michigan 16th Volunteer Infantry Regiment as a Private; promoted to Corporal; died 23 June 1864 wounded in action at Petersburg, Virginia and succumbed to the fatal gunshot wound at a Regimental Hospital. (The U.S., Registers of Deaths of Volunteers, 1861-1865 spells his surname as "Astill.")

Original burial location was at Fort Sedgwick, better known as "Fort Hell."

Alfred's name is included on the Axtell family monument at the First Presbyterian Churchyard, Morristown, Morris County, New Jersey.
