James Slavin grew up on Rose Street in Uniontown, Hastings, New York. In his youth he was a talented athlete. Entering the U.S. Army in March 1943, he served as a combat engineer in Europe with the 294th Engineers. After his ship hit a mine and sank in the English Channel he landed on Omaha Beach, Normandy, on D-Day Plus One, without a helmet or rifle. He said of his World War II experiences in France, Belgium, and Germany, "I wasn't wounded, I never got shot at, and I never shot my rifle." After the war he worked for the recreation and highway departments in Westchester County, New York.
