J. E. (Buddy) Barton, 68, maintenance superintendent with the South Carolina Highway Department for many years until his retirement in 1949, died at the home, 122 Paris Mountain Avenue, at 4 a.m. Friday after a long period of declining health.
Mr. Barton was born at Tigerville August 9, 1888, a son of the late John S. and Mattie Reid Barton. Most of his life was spent in Greenville.
During World War I, Mr. Barton served with the infantry.
Surviving are his wife, Mrs. Henrietta Gay Barton; one daughter, Mrs. Lewis Godfrey of the home; one son, Joe E. Barton Jr., Greenville; one stepson, W. B. Fanning of Taylors; two grandchildren; one sister, Mrs. W. H. Gay of Greer, and one brother, S. P. Barton of Asheville, North Carolina.
Graveside services will be conducted by the Rev. A. M. Doggett and the Rev. Cecil Cothran in Springwood Cemetery at 4:30 p.m. Saturday.
Pallbearers will be Wallace Hopkins, Ben Hiott, John Davis, Dave Hendrix, Waymon Bell and John Dill.
Honorary escort will be Gordon Yeargin, Roy Phillips, Furman Scott, O. V. Adams, W. P. Beacham, J. E. Pittman, Curt Enlow, Lester Jones, Fred Marlar, Fred Foster, Carl H. Trammell, Grady Coleman, Dr. A. H. Davis.
Pallbearers will meet at the funeral home at 4:10 p.m., and honorary escort at the graveside at 4:20 p.m.
The body is at Thomas McAfee Funeral Home.
