Helen Ruth (Ezzyk) Dyer
Former mill worker loved the beach and casino
Helen Ruth (Ezzyk) Dyer, formerly of Cabin Run Road, Berwick, passed away Sunday, Aug. 19, 2012, surrounded by her family after a brief bout with cancer.
She was the eighth of 13 children born to Michael and Catherine (Nodich) Ezzyk, and had the distinction of being the first born on the family farm in North Centre Township on Aug. 22, 1926.
Helen began her working career selling the family's milk, cream and cheese throughout the avenues of Berwick as a teenager. After graduating from Centre School, she went to work full time to support her family at the former Duplan Mill, Baer Mill, and finally Berwick Offray, retiring in 1995.
Helen was married to George C. Dyer on June 26, 1947, and had a 51-year marriage that was severed upon his passing in 1999.
She is survived by two children: Debra Thomas and her husband Dale of Orangeville, and Paul Dyer and his wife Meg of Summer Hill; five grandchildren: Jennifer of Baltimore, Md.; Gayle Lingerfelt and her husband Michael of Mooresville, N.C.; Dale Thomas Jr., also of Mooresville, N.C.; Jeremiah Dyer and his wife Sarah of Endicott, N.Y., and Rebecca Roskos and her husband Greg of Cortland, N.Y. Also, Helen is survived by three great-grandchildren: Gwenyth and Elle Roskos and Declan Dyer.
Helen was preceded in death by three sisters: Ann Rich, Sophie Makar and Mary A. Zenzel. She was also preceded in death by six brothers: Alex, John, Albert, William, Michael and Joseph. She is survived by two sisters: Katie Jasinski of Berwick, and Alice Starr and her husband Ray of Berwick, and by one brother: George Ezzyk and his wife Dollie of Spring Hill, Fla. She is also survived by more than 200 nieces and nephews, spanning four generations.
Helen had a great life that took her many places that she truly enjoyed. Those places include numerous trips to Florida, Las Vegas, Caribbean cruises, and month-long stays on Lake Norman. Her two favorite places to visit were the New Jersey beaches and the casino. She also was an avid bowler, football fan, member of the League of Ukrainian Catholics, and a member of Ss. Cyril and Methodius Church.
A visitation will be held Thursday, Aug. 23, 2012, from 6-8 p.m. at the Mayo Funeral Home Inc., 110 Chestnut St., Berwick. Funeral services will begin 9:30 a.m. Friday, Aug. 24, 2012, from the funeral home, followed by a Divine Liturgy at 10 at Ss. Cyril and Methodius Ukrainian Catholic Church, Warren and First Avenue, Berwick, with the Rev. John Seniw, her pastor, officiating. Interment alongside her husband George will be in the parish cemetery, Berwick.
In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the Ss. Cyril and Methodius Cemetery fund, 706 N. Warren Ave., Berwick, PA 18603.
