Maxine A. Martel, 88, of Kankakee, died Saturday (Jan. 21, 2012) at Provena St.
Mary's Hospital, Kankakee. Visitation will be from 3 p.m. to 6 p.m. Tuesday and
from 10 a.m. Wednesday until the 11 a.m. funeral services at the Clancy-Gernon
Funeral Home, Bourbonnais. The Rev. Charles Wheeler will officiate.

Burial will be in St. Rose Cemetery, Kankakee. Memorials may be made to the
American Heart Association or for Masses.

Mrs. Martel worked for Florence Stove Co. and Illinois Bell Telephone Co. She
had also been a substitute teacher for area Catholic schools. She was born Dec.
5, 1923, in Kankakee, the daughter of Leo and Caroline Strauss Bertrand. She
married her high school sweetheart, Ambrose A. Martel, on Aug. 26, 1944, at St.
Rose of Lima Catholic Church, Kankakee. He died Jan. 21, 2011. She was a
graduate of St. Patrick's High School. Family came first, and she was very
interested in her grandchildren's activities. She volunteered at Provena St.
Mary's Hospital, where she ran the gift shop. She was an avid reader and enjoyed
traveling.

Surviving are five daughters, Riana and Kenneth Sweet, of Greendale, Wis.,
Kathalyn and Angelo Zammuto, of Belvidere, Amy and Edward DeMarah, of
Bourbonnais, Mary Kaye Martel and John Carr, of Houston, Texas, and Barbara and
Steven Blake, of Bourbonnais; 10 grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren; and
one sister, Geraldine Prairie, of Momence.

She was preceded in death by her parents; and two brothers, Clifford and Richard
Bertrand.
