Longtime Anchorage resident Evelyn C. Boeke, 90, former president of Local 878, Hotel and Restaurant Employees Union, died Sept. 15 at Providence Hospital. A visitation was held at Evergreen Memorial Chapel, Eighth Avenue and E Street. A funeral was at First Baptist Church with the Rev. Felton Griffith officiating.

Mrs. Boeke was born Sept. 12, 1899, in Salem, Ark. She came to Kodiak in May 1942 and moved to Skagway in 1943, where she lived until she moved to Seward in 1945. In 1948, she made a permanent move to Anchorage, where she lived until her death. Mrs. Boeke served on the executive board of the Hotel and Restaurant Employees Union for many years. She was also a delegate to the national convention of the union. She served on the Board of Ethics in Anchorage under Mayor George Sullivan. Mrs. Boeke was a member of First Baptist Church, Emblem Club No. 329 and Order of the Amaranth. Her husband, Ben, died in 1972.

She is survived by her brothers, Carlos Sales, of Hemet, Calif., and Murphy Sales, of Crane, Texas; her sisters, Velma Russell, of Allen, Okla., Lynn Wemberly, of Lancaster, Calif., Ruth Larson, of Bishop, Calif., and Opal Lee, of Stockton, Calif. Burial was in the Elks Garden of Anchorage Memorial Park. Memorials may be sent to the American Cancer Society, 406 W. Fireweed Lane, Anchorage 99503.
