George Washington Bemis, the son of Stephen Bemis and Mary Early Bemis, was born on the Bemis Homestead in Nashua Township, Ogle County, Illinois on October 18, 1847. He was a farmer for most of his life.

On December 24, 1876, he married Anna E. Hinkle at the Lighthouse Church Parsonage, Ogle County, Illinois. They raised five children: Frederick George, Frankie, Mabel Clarissa, Judson B. and Glenn Harrison Bemis.

George W. Bemis and Anna lived near the Old Homestead near Oregon, Illinois. In 1902, Anna died, and George moved to Oregon in 1903. In 1913, he moved to Rockford, where he died February 14, 1918. He was laid to rest beside his wife at Daysville Cemetery, Ogle County, Illinois.

Thursday, February 14, 1918 - Daily Rockford Gazette (Rockford, IL) - Stroke Fatal to George Bemis - Retired Farmer Succumbs at Hospital at Early Hour Today - A heart attack of an apoplectic nature seized George Bemis as he was walking along South Fourth street Tuesday last, and the police ambulance was summoned to convey him to Rockford hospital, his death resulting at 5:30 o'clock this morning. The deceased was 70 years of age, and he made his home the past four years with a daughter, Mrs. William M. Morse, 315 North Johnston avenue. Mr. Bemis was born in Nashua township in Ogle county, where he spent the greater part of his life, retiring from the farm there a few years ago to spend his declining years with the daughter in Rockford. One other child, a son, Judson B. Bemis, of this city, also survives him. John E. and Clinton Bemis, both of Rockford, are brothers, and a half-brother in Colorado, and another in Massachusetts, together with a half-sister at Sycamore, Ill., Mrs. Mary Lattin, also survive. Brief funeral services will be held at the home of the daughter Saturday forenoon, and the remains will be taken to Oregon, Ill., where services will be held at the Methodist church. Interment will be at the Daysville cemetery in Ogle county.
