Dr. Ted Allen Matthews Sr., 77,of Ligonier, died Monday, Aug. 13, 2012, at Bethlen Personal Care Home. Born Dec. 26, 1934, in Greensburg, son of the late Samuel and Doris Gail (Horning) Matthews. He is survived by his wife, Shirley (Harris), of Ligonier; and their children, Dr. Ted Matthews Jr. and wife, Natalie (Brinley), of Latrobe, Dr. Bruce Matthews and wife, Sharon (Mortimer), of Greensburg, Julia Gail and husband, Timothy Butala, of Latrobe; grandchildren, Leslie (Matthews), wife of Zachary Baker, Emily A. Matthews, Ted A. Matthews III, Olivia M. Matthews, Claudia R. Matthews, Jamey L. Butala and Timothy A. Butala Jr.; brothers and sisters, Keith and wife, Sue Matthews, Samuel Matthews Jr., Carol Matthews, Dennis and wife, Mary Ann Matthews, all of Greensburg; uncle, James L. Horning Jr., of Rector; and many nieces, nephews, family and friends. Ted was a 1952 Graduate of Greensburg High School and a Navy veteran. Also a graduate of University of Pittsburgh where he was a member of the basketball team and the University of Pittsburgh Dental School. He was a member of St. James Evangelical Lutheran Church, Ligonier, where he served on the church council. He was a member of the Rotary Club, Greensburg, and past president of Westmoreland County Dental Society. Ted began practice with Matthews/Esway Oral Maxillofacial Surgery offices in Greensburg and Latrobe. He was also an avid hunter and Steelers fan. Family and friends will be received from 7 to 9 p.m. Thursday and from 3 to 5 and 7 to 9 p.m. Friday at J. PAUL McCRACKEN FUNERAL HOME, Ligonier. Funeral service will be held at 10 a.m. Saturday at St. James Evangelical Lutheran Church. Committal will be in Ligonier Valley Cemetery where military graveside service will by conducted by Ligonier Valley Honor Guard. In lieu of flowers the family requests donations to St. James Evangelical Church, 300 W. Main St., Ligonier, PA 15658, or the American Diabetes Association, P.O. Box 11454, Alexandria, VA 22312.
