In 1900 Florence was recorded in the household of her parents Henry and Maria Barss at 104 Green Street in Gardner. She was nine. Her brother Howard was eleven and a younger sister, Mary, was six years old. Her father's occupation was "setting up chairs" most likely at a chair manufacturing shop. He was a naturalized American citizen who immigrated to the U.S.A. about 1880. Little Flossie would pass away a year later.

The family remained at their Green Street home by the 1910 census. Henry Barss was employed repairing chairs. Only sixteen-year-old Mary, sister of Flossie, remained in her parents' care.

Four years later Mary Barss married William Reilly at Concord, Massachusetts.

Henry's wife died in 1916 and it's unknown if he left town right away but in 1930 he was recorded in the census for the City of San Francisco, California. Mr. Barss was a salesman at a paint store. San Francisco was not unknown to Henry. An 1886 voter registration record was found for him in that city. That was one year before he married his wife in Massachusetts.
