Verna Mae Henrietta was born on April 9, 1935, in Clayton Center, Iowa the daughter of Carl and Margaret (Burr) Berns. She was raised and educated in the Winthrop area. On October 26, 1953, Verna was united in marriage to Jerome "Jerry" Keppler at St. Patrick's Catholic Church in Winthrop. Seven children were blessed to this union. Together they farmed near Lamont, West Union, Fayette, Strawberry Point and in 1963 they moved east of Manchester to farm. In1997 they moved into town. Verna also worked at the Montgomery Wards Catalog Store and the C & S Store in Manchester. She was a faithful member of St. Mary's Catholic Church for 42 years, belonged to Catholic Daughter of America, and showed her faith with her collection of rosaries. Verna was called to her heavenly home following a courageous battle with cancer, on Tuesday, April 11th. She was with her family in her home. Verna was seventy-one years of age. Verna loved having family get-to-gethers, Mother/Daughter Days, and watching her grandkids and great-grand kids ballgames. She enjoyed crocheting, baking cinnamon rolls, dancing, fishing, volleyball, bowling, playing cards, and a good "Manhatten". Verna will be sadly missed by her husband, Jerry Keppler of Manchester; six children, Rosemary (Dan) Drees, Sue (Bill) Logan, Steve (Gloria) Keppler, Ronald Keppler, Lisa (Mark) Hepke, and Diane (Ken) Klein all of Manchester; thirteen grandchildren, Danelle O'Connell, Mike Drees, Jaci Zieser, and Curt Drees; Brian and Brett Logan, Phil and Drew Keppler, Ben and Kelsey Hepke and Derek, Kayla, and Kristi Klein; eight great-grandchildren, Blake, Bradley, Brooke, Gavin, Carter, Wesley, Chloe and Brayden; a sister, Leona Harris of Belle Plaine; brothers, Willie (Norma) Berns and Jim (JoLane) Berns of Marion, and Dennis (Mary) Berns of Cedar Rapids; sister-in-law, Gladys (Jim) Hilsenbeck of Marion, Lucille Keppler of Strawberry Point, and Wilma Keppler of Oelwein; and brothers-in-law, Father Dan Keppler of Monona, Jim Keppler of Manchester and Irvin Keppler of Elkader. Verna was preceded in death by her parents, Carl and Margaret Berns; parent-in-laws, Henry and Rose (Hoeger) Keppler; a son, Bill Keppler in 1975; brothers, Elmer and Donald Berns; a sister, Marie Monaghan; brothers-in-law, Cletus, Leonard, Ray, Harold, and John Keppler, Howard and Floyd Bushaw, Jim Harris, Bill Burr, and Francis Monaghan; and sisters-in-law, Mary Burr, Clarinda and Berniece Bushaw, Ollie, Lottie, Anita, and Florence Keppler, and Celine Berns.
