A rural Manchester youth, William J. Keppler, 17, was killed and three young persons were injured in a one-car accident Saturday at 9:30 p.m. about four miles north of Delaware on highway 38.
Keppler was thrown out of the car and died instantly.
Three passengers in the vehicle, Ann Naber, 14, of Greeley, was taken to Mercy hospital in Dubuque with multiple injuries. Pamela Bockenstedt, 15, also of Greeley, was rushed to Delaware County Memorial hospital, suffering from multiple injuries. She was in intensive care. Duane Drees, 17, of rural Manchester, was taken to the local hospital and kept overnight for observation.
He was born at West Union, Jan. 27, 1958, the son of Jerome and Verna Mae Berns Keppler. When he was two years old his parents moved to a farm near Strawberry Point. The family lived there three years and then moved to their present farm just east of Manchester. He received his education in St. Mary's school through the seventh grade and then entered the West Delaware schools. He had just completed his junior year.
He was a member of St. Mary's church and the Catholic Youth organization of the parish.
The rosary was recited Sunday evening at 8 o'clock and the St. Mary's Parish Wake services were held Monday at 8 p.m. at the Shelly funeral home.
Surviving are his parents, Mr. and Mrs. Jerome Keppler of Route 2, Manchester; four sisters, Mrs. Daniel (Rosemary) Drees of Manchester and Susan, Lisa and Diane Keppler, all at home; two brothers, Steven and Ronald Keppler, both at home; one niece, Danielle Drees of Manchester; his maternal grandfather, Carl Berns of Winthrop, and a number of aunts, uncles and other relatives.
Funeral services were held Tuesday morning in St. Mary's church where a concelebrated mass was offered at 10 o'clock. The principal celebrant was the Rev. Daniel Keppler of Aquinas high school Cascade, uncle of William, and concelebrating with Father Keppler was the Rev. Justin Kress. The homily was given by Father Kress. Internment was made in St. Mary's cemetery with the graveside prayers being read by Fathers Keppler and Kress.
