The son of John George Ortleb and Caroline Pfundstein, Gottleb married Bertha Eichhorn on 30 May 1904 in Calhoun County, Illinois. The couple in St. Louis next to Bertha's parents and the family of her sister.

Gottleb and Bertha did not have any children.

Gottleb had many different jobs over the years. During the early part of their marriage, Gottleb worked as a clerk for the railroad. He later took a job as an inspector for a paper company and then worked as a maintenance man at a petroleum plant.

Gottleb was a member of Forest Park Lodge No. 578 A.F. & A.M. for 50 years. He was also a Mason.

At the time of his death, Gottleb was 85 years, 6 months and 11 days old. He was survived by 2 brothers, John and Albert Ortleb.

A Masonic service took place at 8 p.m. on 14 Apr 1967 at Drehmann-Harrall Chapel on Natural Bridge Road in St. Louis, Missouri. Funeral services were conducted there at 2 p.m. the following afternoon.

Gottleb was preceded in death by his wife, Bertha, who passed away in 1962.
