The son of John George Ortleb and Caroline Pfundstein, "Hans" served in the United States Army during World War I. He was a private when discharged.

Hans married Mrs. Dolla Essie "Dolly" (nee Barnard) Hinman in 1957. She was the mother of 3 surviving children from her first marriage to Elmer Ellsworth Hinman.

Hans was a carpenter and was employed at Olin until his retirement. He was a member of the American Legion. Dolly was a licensed practical nurse.

Hans died at Yinger Nursing Home at the age of 84 years, 9 months and 2 days. He was survived by his wife, Dolly; 1 brother, Albert of Overland, St. Louis County, Missouri; 2 step-daughters; 1 step-son; and 7 step-grandchildren.

Visitation was held after 3 p.m. on 14 Dec 1971 at Hanks Funeral Home in Brussels. Funeral services were conducted there at 2 p.m. the following afternoon. Graveside services were handled by the American Legion.

Dolly passed away on 27 Oct 1987 at Jersey Care Center in Jerseyville. She was buried next to her first husband in Greene County, Illinois.

Children: 2 step-daughters, 1 step-son.
