William and Zerravina Cheatham welcomed the birth of their daughter, Melinda on October 2, 1838.

At twenty years of age (or just shy of), Melinda married Burrell James in Lamar County, Texas. According to the 1900 census, they had 8 children in all. These are the ones that are known: William H., Isaac "Ike", Levina (Leona?) , Charles Hamilton "C.H." (married Amanda Simmons), Lenora (Lee Nora?), Lou Ella "Ella" (Louella?)(married Thomas Henry Smallwood 12-30-1900). Lou Ella was still living when T.H. died 10-16-37. With the exception of C.H. and Ike, very little info is known about Melinda and Burrell's children.

After the death of her husband in 1886, Melinda's 14 year-old son, C.H. continued to run the family's cotton farm. Eight years later, he married Mandy, and the couple moved to Sabinal between 1902 and 1910. Melinda continued living with Ike for a while, but did make the move to Sabinal sometime after the April 1910 census was taken. There, she lived out the remainder of her life. She passed away on April 25, 1918.

Melinda is buried at Sabinal Cemetery, Lot #2, Block 17, Section 7. In 1973, several of her grandchildren (C.H.'s children) wanted to purchase a headstone to place on her gravesite. The cemetery was unable to give the exact location of her burial ~ only saying it was one of three spaces. Melinda's final resting place continues to be unmarked.

**Not 100% positive that all the information re: Melinda's children is correct due to misspellings on census records; and that ages do not always line up from one census to another. Also, the use of middle or nicknames was common in many families.

Only the gravesites for Ike and C.H. have been located. Louella died sometime after her husband ~ the cemetery in which they are buried is unknown .. nor can a death certificate be found for either.
