Attempt To Hitch Train Ride Ends in Tragedy For Boy, 10
Body of Gerald Zahn Severed By Wheels
An attempt to "hitch" a ride on a Soo line freight train, moving over the Rapids
hump at about 15 miles-an-hour, ended in a tragic death under the wheels for
Gerald Zahn, 10-year-old son of Mr. and Mrs. Ernest Zahn of J-6-R, Custerdale,
shortly before 2:30 Tuesday afternoon.
Parts of the mangled body of the boy, who had been on his way home from swimming
in the river near Manitowoc Rapids, were strewn along the rails a few feet south
of the poin wher the extreme western end of Meadow lane crosses the Soo tracks.
It was here, according to his companions, that young Zahn, a fifth grade student
at the Adams school, made his unsuccessful attempt to grab onto the ladder on the
side of one of the moving freight cars and fell under the wheels which cut his
body in two at the waist and severed his arms and legs.

Born in Merrill, Wis., in 1938, Gerald moved to Manitowoc with his parents four
