Third Person in Car Crash Dies
Mrs. Zahn Is Victim
Husband, Badly Hurt, Not Informed of Death
Death toll in the crash of two cars early Wednesday morning at the junction of
Memorial drive and Roosevelt avenue, Two Rivers, mounted to three today with
the death in the Two Rivers municipal hospital of Mrs. Edward Zahn, 27, of 841
North 12th street, city.
Mrs. Zahn was a passenger in a car driven by her husband, which was struck by
a car driven by James E. Wagner, 23, of Wauwatosa. Wagner and his companion
Walter F. Gerlach, Jr., 22, also of Wauwatosa, who were killed…
Husband Not Told
Mrs. Zahn, who sustained a fractured neck and severe internal injuries regained
consciousness only a few moments before her death. She asked the nurse what had
happened, murmured a short prayer and then lapsed into unconsciousness again.
Her husband, who is still in critical condition at the Two Rivers hospital with
a concussion and fractures of both legs, has not been told of the death of his
wife.
Funeral services for Mrs. Zahn will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday at the Immanel
Lutheran church, the Rev. Theo. Uetzmann officiating. Burial will be in Evergreen
cemetery. The body is at the Pfeffer funeral home where members of the family will
be Friday evening. The casket will not be opened and will be moved to the church
at 11 a.m. Saturday.
Mrs. Zahn, nee Erma Heppner, was born in Germany, the daughter of the late Mr.
and Mrs. Fred Hoeppner. Twenty-one years ago the family moved to Manitowoc. Mrs.
Hoeppner died seven years ago and Mr. Hoeppner two years after. Mrs. Zahn then
took over the household to care for her four younger brothers.
Married Two Years
In 1945 she was married to Edward Zahn, who has been employed as a mechanic in
the Ames garage, following his return from service in the South Pacific in the
World War II.
Survivors are the husband; an 18-month-old son, Gary; four brothers, Max, Albert,
Paul and Fred, all of this city.
Both Wagner and Gerlach were veterans of World War II.
Gerlach was employed by the Wauwatosa park board and planned to enter Milwaukee
State Teachers college in February. Besides his parents he is survived by a brother,
Robert. Wagner was a junior at Marquette university and planned to enroll when
school opened this month.
Funeral services for both will be held at Wauwatosa.
Inquest Postponed
Meanwhile, Coroner Theodore Teitgen said this morning that he had taken testimony
Wednesday afternoon at the courthouse from one witness to the fatal crash. However,
the coroner pointed out he plans no formal inquest until such time as Edward Zahn,
only survivor of the accident, recovers sufficiently to give his version.
In case of the latter's death the inquest will be held immediately thereafter, the
coroner added.
