JOSEPH THOMAS (d. 1876)

Death of Jos. Thomas on Saturday after a long illness. The fire
department, of which he was a devoted member, carried him to his grave.

GONE TO REST
It becomes our painful duty to chronicle the death of another old resident
and esteemed citizen who brought his earthly labors and cares to a close
on Saturday of last week. Mr. Joseph Thomas, long and favorably known by
all the old settlers who have lived here from the time our city was but a
small village to the present day, passed quietly away from life to enter
upon the silent slumbers of the grave. Mr. Thomas has been suffering for a
long time, prostrated by some gastric affection, baffling the skill of
physicians which finally culminated in his death. He was a man well along
in years, having passed the page of 56 years, highly esteemed by all who
knew him. His mortal remains were interred on Tuesday accompanied by the
Fire Department of which he was a member and a large attendance of friends
and acquaintances who mourn his loss. Requiscat in pace.
