OVERCOME BY GAS
Frank Rose Has Narrow Escape From Asphyxiation at Toledo Hotel
Overcome by gas, Frank Rose, an employe of the Manitowoc Gas Company, had a narrow
escape from asphyxiation this morning while he was at work with a crew of men
making repairs to a gas main leading into the Toledo House on York Street. Rose
was down in the trench making a pipe connection while the flow of gas was turned
on and though he knew of his danger did not think it necessary to come to the
surface occasionally to get a supply of fresh air. He was told by his fellows to
come out of the trench and just as he refused, he toppled over and was pulled out
with difficulty, the men who went down after him being also affected by the fumes.
Mr. Rogers of the Toledo House, finally went to rescue and the man was raised to
the surface. He revived in the open air but felt the effects during the day, being
weak and affected by nausea.
