Herman Roepke, Early Miller, Dies at Home
Heart Attack Proves Fatal To 79-Year-Old Man; Rites Will Be On Tuesday
Herman Roepke, who with his brothers established one of the early
grist and flour mills in the town of Newton, died early tody at the
home on Route 3, south of the city. He was 79.
Mr. Roepke suffered a heart attack last Monday and rallied for a
few days. Last night a second attack proved fatal.
Funeral services will be held on Tuesday at 1:30 p.m. from the home
and at 2 p.m. from the Evangelical Lutheran church in charge of the
Rev. Koeninger. Interment will be at Evergreen cemetery.
The deceased was born at Newton in 1855 and always resided in the
county. He took up farming. In 1875 he with his brother, Dietrich
and John, established the Roepke grist and flour mill on Highway 42,
a half mile south of Brown's Corners. They also operated a saw mill.
The Roepkes conducted the two mills for nearly 25 years as well as a
farm. The mill was discontinued and a few years later dismantled. Of
late years Mr. Roepke lived a retired life on the farm south of the
city.
The deceased was married in 1881 to Minnie Wernecke. She died in 1928.
Survivors are three daughters, Mrs. Ernst Schultz, Appleton, Louise,
at home and Laura of this city; four sons, the Rev. William Roepke,
Marquette, Mich., Edwin, Newton, John, Milwaukee and Reynold, city;
and a sister, Mrs. Anna Vogt of Wausau. There are 19 grandchildren
and one great grandchild.
The body is to be removed to the home Sunday afternoon from the Wattawa,
Urbanek and Schlei funeral home and may be viewed there up to the hour
of the funeral.
