FALLS FROM BOAT, CAUGHT IN MUD, DROWNS
Arthur Pentzien of This City Loses Life at Collins, Sunday
SECOND TRAGIC DEATH IN FAMILY
Thrown from his boat by the recoil of a gun which he had just discharged while
hunting in a skiff on the river four miles west of Collins, Sunday, Arthur
Pentzien, a well known young man of this city, lost his life by drowning in less
than three feet of water. Pentzien's body was mired in the mud in the bottom of
the river and he was held prisoner as death overcame him. A bruise above the eye
suggests the theory that the unfortunate youth may have struck the end of the boat
as he was thrown overboard or been hit by the heavy gun and partially stunned and
was unable to help himself. Edward Thompson, an uncle of the dead youth witnessed
the accident but could not render aid being too far away. Mr. Thompson, with others,
on the river it was forty minutes later before the body of the dead boy was taken
from the river. The body was brought to this city Sunday afternoon.
Mr. Pentzien left the city Saturday morning to spend a few days hunting in vicinity
of Brillion and Collins and the fatal accident happened between 8 and 9 o'clock
Sunday morning, a short time after the party had reached the hunting grounds.
Messages were received in this city shortly before noon Sunday conveying the sad
news and Henry Pentzien, father of the boy and Halver Nelson, his father-in-law with
Joseph Wattawa of the Urbanek and Wattawa co., immediately left for the scene to take
charge of the body.
Mr. Pentzien was 23 years of age and was employed by the Worel, Zeman and Stangel Co.
He was married a year ago to Miss Nelson, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Halver Nelson and
besides his bride who is widowed before the honeymoon ended, is survived by a baby
daughter, four weeks old. His parents, Mr. and Mrs. Henry Pentzien, So. 15th St.,
three brothers, August, Louis and Irwin and two sisters, Mrs. Anna Schroeder and Miss
Edna Pentzien also survive.
Funeral services were held from the home of Halver Nelson, Washington St., at 1:30
this afternoon to St. Paul's Norwegian Lutheran church, the burial being under the
auspices of the Modern Woodmen of which order the decedent was a member. Pallbearers
were H. Halverson W. Klein, C. Haase, Henry Meisner, Walter Kazda and Charles Johnson.
