Alphile "Allie" O. Larson, age 91, formerly of Appleton and Fargo, N.D., passed
away on Tuesday, Feb. 10, 2004, in Ludington, Mich.
She was born on Sept. 15, 1912, in Manitowoc, the daughter of the Rev. Ole K. and
Anna (Olsen) Espeseth. Allie graduated from Lawrence College with a Bachelor of
Arts and Master of Arts in Classical Studies. On Dec. 2,1944, she married Ray E.
Larson who preceded her in death on May 18, 1977. During World War II, she was
employed as Supervisor for Women in the Security Division, Chief of Ordinance.
She was subsequently employed for E.I. DuPont Corporation as employment supervisor
retiring in 1954. Thereafter she taught at the high school and university level in
Litchfield, Ill., Evanston, Ill., Fargo, N.D., and, in her retirement years, as a
volunteer in the Appleton school system teaching English as a second language. For
her latter service, the Appleton community awarded her the Golden Rule Award in
recognition of her 12 years of teaching English as a second language to not only
Appleton residents, but also the members of visiting families from foreign nations.
Allie was a member of Prince of Peace Lutheran Church in Appleton, Emanuel Lutheran
Church in Ludington, Alpha Delta Pi National Social Sorority, Eta Sigma Phi, National
Honorary Classical Fraternity; and the PEO National Sisterhood. Fluent in five
languages, she enjoyed international travel, outdoor activity, gardening, reading,
and the arts, but especially time spent with her family and friends.
Allie is survived by her niece; Connie (Ron) Torrison, Manitowoc; nephew: Ted (Judy)
Winkel, Ludington, Mich.; grandniece: Erika Winkel, Colorado Springs, Colo., and
grandnephews, Brad Winkel, Waldorf, Md. Allie was preceded in death by her parents,
her husband, and sisters, Constance Espeseth and Irene (Espeseth) Winkel.
The funeral services for Allie will be conducted on Wednesday, Feb. 18, 2004, at
11 a.m. at Prince of Peace Lutheran Church, 2330 East Calumet St., Appleton, with
the Rev. Gary Nikleberg officiating. Internment will take place in Evergreen Cemetery
in Manitowoc. Visitation will be at the church on Wednesday from 10 a.m. until the
time of the service. Allie wished memorial contributions to be directed to the Hmong
Literacy Support services for the education of Hmong youth in Appleton c/o Hmong
American Partnership, 2198 South Memorial Drive, Appleton, WI 54915. Envelopes will
0also be available at the church.
The Wichmann Funeral Home, Appleton, assisted the family with funeral arrangements.
