DEATH ENTERS HETH HOME A SECOND TIME IN 2 WEEKS

This community was saddened to learn of the demise of R.E. Heth, who passed away last Saturday evening at 7:40 o'clock. It was the second time within two weeks, as on Sept. 7th, three year old Merrill Heth, a grandson of the deceased gentleman, died of burns received from a fall into the embers of a bonfire. Mr. Heth was devotedly fond of his grandchildren, and the tragic death of the little boy undoubtedly hastened his end. He had been in failing health all summer, due to cancer of the stomach, but bravely refused to give up until his physical strength was exhausted. Even on the day of his death, he sat on the front porch of his home with his wife following the dinner hour. Shortly after two o'clock, Mrs. Heth left the house to do a small errand in the yard, and during her absence, Mr. Heth was taken with a dizzy spell and fell to the floor of his room. Dr. Speaker attended him, and he rallied quickly and seemed quite comfortable and almost himself. At 6:30 o'clock, however, the change that betokens the end of mortal life set in, and he passed away about an hour afterwards, being conscious almost up to the last. Of late he had frequently spoken of his approaching death, and was willing to go, dying peacefully in the knowledge of duty well done, and a life usefully lived.

Funeral services were held Tuesday morning at 10 o'clock from the home and at 10:30 from the Methodist church, with Rev. Baker officiating. A quartette, composed of Mrs. E.C. Frandson, Mrs. Fred Wells, W.F. Brower and A.B. Canady, sang "Abide With Me", "The Old Rugged Cross" and "It Is Well With My Soul", the first and last being chosen by Mrs. Heth. Mrs. W.N. Baker, wife of the pastor, was the pianist.

The pallbearers were Henry Peper, Fred Wells, Fred Lohr, Ed Wieland, C.L. Wade. L.A. Warwick, Harry Miller and Rasmus Nelson. Burial was made in Wall Lake, by the side of a deceased infant son, Winifred.

Those attending the funeral from a distance were his adopted son, Earl, of Castleford, Idaho, Walter Elphick and wife, and Merrill Elphick and wife of Lima Center, Wis., F. H. Baker and wife and sons, George, Frederick, Harand and Wilburn and the latter's wife, Mrs. Florence Pringle, of Sac City, Mrs. Kate Hall, of Scranton and Mrs. Elsie Cressler, of Wichita, Kansas.

Rudolph Ernest Heth was born May 11, 1856, at Fort Atchinson, Wis., and died September 19, 1931, at Lake View, Iowa, thus reaching the age of 75 years, 4 months and 8 days.

On March 24, 1881, he was united in marriage to Miss Adelaide Elphick at Lima Center, Wis. The couple lived at Fort Atchinson, Wis., until 1887, and then moved to Sac county, living for a time at Early and then at Wall Lake. In 1901, they moved to Carnarvon, where they resided for 22-1/2 years and where Mr. Heth was employed by the C & N.W.R.R. as section foreman Mr. and Mrs. Heth moved to Lake View in 1923, and have since resided here, their residence in Sac county up to this time having been for a duration of 44 years. Mr. Heth was reared in the Lutheran faith, but 35 years ago joined the Methodist church at Wall Lake under the pastorate of Rev. Elmer Mahood.

He is survived by his wife, one daughter, Jessie, wife of F.H. Baker of Ida Grove, one son, Marion R. Heth, of Lake View, and one adopted son, Earl M. Heth, of Castleford, Idaho. The latter arrived several days previous to his father's demise, and his presence was a great comfort to the departed as well as to the surviving members of the family. Mr. Heth also leaves four sisters, Mrs. Lena Van Drew, of Milwaukee, and Tillie, Mrs. Alice Heilman and Mrs. Millie Dettman, of Fort Atchinson, Wis., also one brother, Gustave, of Fort Atchinson. Two sisters and one brother preceded him in death. One son, Winfield, died 35 years ago as the result of burns sustained in a bonfire. Seven grandchildren survive.

Mr. Heth was a good man in every sense of the word, kindly in thought and deed, cheerful under sorrow and suffering, hard-working and patient, and friendly to one and all. He has an excellent record as an employee of the Northwestern Railroad, and was cited some years ago in the employees' magazine published by that company for his efficient and faithful service. He was employed for 28 years at railroad work, 5 years in Wisconsin, and later at Wall Lake, and more than 22 years at Carnarvon, and during that time never had a wreck nor any serious accident.

He was a kind and loving husband and father, and will be greatly missed by the home circle, as well as by his neighbors and friends.
