STATEN ISLAND, N.Y. -- Longtime Staten Islander Arlie Mae Briggs, 83, of West Brighton, a retired supevisor for the city Health Department, died Saturday in Staten Island University Hospital, in Ocean Breeze.

Born Arlie Mae Murphy in Newsome, Va., she moved to West Brighton in 1936. After she and Booker Briggs married in 1945, the couple moved to New Brighton. They settled in West Brighton in 1962.

A graduate of McKee High School, she earned an associate's degree in early childhood development from the former Richmond College, St. George.

Mrs. Briggs worked as a supervisor for the city Health Department at the Willowbrook Developmental Center. She retired in 1974.

She was deeply involved in Fellowship Baptist Church, Mariners Harbor. She was a member of the Mothers' Ministry, a deconess, an aide to the pastor and a member of the Pastor's Aid Ministry. She also served as a church treasurer, sang in the Gospel Chorus and Sanctuary Choir, and was a member of the transportation committee, Nurses Ministry and Hospitality Ministry. She coordinated several programs including the Share Program, the Compassionate Ministry and the Lockman Seniors of Mariners Harbor, also associated with the church.

Her favorite saying was, "Lord, don't move my mountain, just give me the strength to climb," said her daughter, Lisa Spivack.

Mrs. Briggs was close to her "spiritual daughter,' Mosezetta Overby, family said.

She enjoyed visiting people in hospitals and nursing homes and advising many in her church and community.

She also was a member of the Democratic Political Association.
