He immigrated on the ship Hammonia from Hamburg to New York arriving November 16, 1872. Last name on immigration records is Pruss.

At the age of 12, he began working in the Carrollton saw mills.. For 25 years, he worked for WB Mershon & Co. Eventally, he then became a grocer. He served as Carrollton Township Treasurer and Supervisor, 1927-1930. He was an active Republican. He was ressponsible for obtaining the first concrete pavement in any township in Michigan.
