Evelyn Mary Veen was born on September 27, 1916 in New Rockford, ND to Georgeous Peter and Rose Mary (Maginel) Hammer. She was educated at the New Rockford public and private schools.
She married Taylor Sigurd Veen at Manfred, ND on December 14, 1935. They farmed in the Cathay area until 1950 when they moved to Cummings, ND area and farmed there. Evelyn purchased and managed the Cummings Store for many years. She also delivered mail to Caledonia, ND. In 1991, the Veens moved to Kiwanis Housing in Hillsboro.
Throughout the years, she was an active member of Stavanger Lutheran Church, Cathay, Highland Lutheran Church, Buxton, and Our Savior's Lutheran Church, Hillsboro. She did a lot of quilting for missions, as well as other projects. She also made cards for the Senior Center in Hillsboro. She was a member of Thrivent and Royal Neighbors.
In the fall of 2005, Evelyn entered the Hillsboro Medical Center Nursing Home.
She is survived by her daughter, Mary Ann (Dallas) Boeddeker, Hillsboro, and her son, Ted (Emily) Veen, Fargo; six grandchildren, Jan (Dwayne) Leidholm, Hillsboro; Jay (Kelly) Boeddeker, Fargo; Jill (Eric) Rotvold, South St. Paul; Todd (Kim) Veen, Harwood; Tami (Tim) Rudolph, Harwood; and Terry Veen, Harwood; nine great grandchildren, Nathan, Matthew, and Kendra Leidholm, Scott and Ellie Rotvold, Tyler and Tess Veen, Tanner and Tailor Rudolph, three brothers, Thomas Hammer, Grass Valley, CA; James Hammer, Havre, MT; and Edward (Sandra) Hammer, Nashville, TN; and four sisters, Alice Veen, Norfolk, VA; Mabel Walsh, Woodinville, WA; Helen Allen, Kalispell, MT, and Margie Arnold, Saint Petersburg, FL; and numerous nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Taylor, and her infant son, Dale; six brothers, Joseph, George, Leslie, Peter, Charles, and an infant; and three sisters, Marian, Doris, and Rose.
VISITATION: 6:30 to 8 PM Friday, January 23, 2009 at the Hillsboro Medical Center Chapel and also one hour prior to the service in the church on Saturday
PRAYER SERVICE: 7 PM Friday at the nursing home chapel
FUNERAL: 11 AM Saturday, January 24, 2009 at Our Savior's Lutheran Church in Hillsboro
