The funeral of John R. Bonnel, 80, a retired farmer and banker of the Nortonville community, will be held at 1:30 p.m. today at the Sawin & Dyer chapel. The Rev. Harold Roberts will officiate. Burial will be in the Evergreen cemetery, Effingham.

A Retired Banker Dies At Hospital
John R. Bonnel, 80, Atchison, retired farmer and banker of the Nortonville community, died Thursday, April 6 at the Atchison hospital. He entered the hospital Wednesday. He was ill about two months.
A son of Charles and Mary House Bonnel, John Rice Bonnel was born May 18, 1880, on the Bonnel homestead north of Nortonville. He live in the Nortonville community until moving to Atchison in 1944, when he retired from farming. he retired as president of the First National bank of Nortonville in 1946.
Mr. Bonnel was a member of Star District 73 school board of Atchison county over 25 years. His father came to Kansas in the early days and settled on the homestead between Nortonville and Effingham. John Bonnel was reared on their farm and operated it until his retirement. When Mr. Bonnel retired he sold the farm to George Lee.
John Bonnel's immediate family was composed of 10 sisters and 5 brothers.
As a boy John Bonnel attended the Clingan school. He married Anna Lassen of Atchison in 1903. She died in 1937. For the past several years Mr. Bonnel has made his home with his son, Sid Bonnel in Atchison.
He was a member of the Pleasant Grove Christian church which affiliated with the Nortonville Christian church. He was a member of the Atchison County Farm Bureau.
All of his life Mr. Bonnel was an active and industrious man. He was know for his integrity. He was devoted to his friends and family.
He leave a daughter, Mrs. Newton (Doris) Faulnoner, Santa Ana, Calif.: two sons, Sid bones, Leavenworth; four sisters, Mrs. Josei Pittman Huntington Park Calif., Mrs. Laura Butler, Long Beach Calif., Mrs. Kate Henry, Ontario, Calif., and Mrs. Eva Whitaker, Nortonville; 11 grandchildren and 12 great grandchildren.
Two sons and a daughter preceded him in death. Joe Orla Bonnel, Earl Rice Bonnel and Dorothea Bonnel.
Funeral services were held at 1:30 p.m. Sunday at Sawin & Dyer chapel, Atchison. The Rev. Harold Roberts, pastor of the First Christian church officiated. Burial was in the family lot in the Evergreen cemetery at Effingham.
Pallbearers were Dan, Charles, Ralph and Roy Bonnel, Milo Lassen and Harold Scarlett.
