In 1862, when Robert E. Lee's Army of Northern Virginia crossed the Potomac River into Maryland, Pennsylvania governor Andrew Gregg Curtin called for the formation of emergency militia regiments to defend the state. John F. Wise responded by enrolling in Mechanicsburg on September 11 as a private with Co. F, 1st Pennsylvania Militia. The crisis passed after the battle of Antietam, and the unit discharged September 25, 1862.
