Nobility. Duke of Austria. He was born at Habsburg castle as the fourth son of King Albrecht II and Elisabeth of Görz. First intended for a clerical career, he gave that up after failure to get elected as Bishop of Passau. He married Johanna von Pfirt in 1324, increasing his territory. After the death of his brother Friedrich III, he and his brother Otto ruled all Habsburg dominions in Austria and Styria together. He mediated several times between European rulers, but remained loyal to Emperor Louis IV, bis brother's former rival. He was responsible for the "Albertinian House Rule" and the constitutions of Styria and Carinthia. He died in Vienna but was not buried in the Cathedral there but in his foundation the Charterhouse of Gaming. When the Charterhouse was secularized by Joseph II in 1782, he was moved to the parish church of Gaming. In 1985 the grave was discovered and he was transferred back to the Charterhouse.
