Eugene Philip McMonigle, 84, died Wednesday, April 4, 2012, at a local hospital, after a courageous battle with a lengthy illness. He was born July 5, 1927, in Houlton, the late Frank and Gertrude (Garrity) McMonigle. He attended St. Mary's Grammar School, Houlton, and graduated from Houlton High School in 1945. Eugene served in the U.S. Army during World War II in the 8th Infantry Regiment 4th Infantry Division and received the Army of Occupation Medal - Germany. He attained the rank of private-2 and received an honorable discharge July 24, 1956. He resided in Houlton throughout his lifetime. He was a part time grocery clerk at A&P grocery store in Houlton and also worked for Birdseye Division, Caribou, and Fitz's Bottling, Houlton. Eugene worked seasonally for the potato harvest as a potato picker, as well as on his family farm. He traveled to Boston and Connecticut to look for work, but eventually returned to Houlton. Eugene was a devout parishioner of St. Mary's of the Visitation Church. Eugene loved all New England sports teams, but was most loyal to watching and listening to the Boston Red Sox. He enjoyed his family, watching sports on TV, reading the daily newspaper, potato, berry and fiddlehead picking, gardening, word find puzzles and taking long walks on his family farm. He is survived by one sister, Margaret Ochmanski of Miami; several nieces, nephews and cousins. In addition to his parents, he was predeceased by four sisters, Mildred, Alice, Anna and Mary; and three brothers, Louis, James and Francis. Friends may call 6-8 p.m. Monday, April 9, at Dunn Funeral Home, 11 Park St., Houlton. A Mass of Christian burial was celebrated 10 a.m. Tuesday, April 10, at St. Mary of the Visitation Church, 112 Military St., Houlton. Interment was at St. Mary's Cemetery.
