Francis Lawrence McMonigle, 89, died Friday, Nov. 21, 2008, at Madigan Estates Nursing Home Facility after a courageous battle with a lengthy illness. He was born May 2, 1919, in Houlton, to the late Frank and Gertrude (Garrity) McMonigle. He attended Houlton Grammar School and graduated from Houlton High School in 1937. Francis served in the U.S. Army during World War II as a radio mechanic and was a member of the 456th Bombardment Squadron. He attained the rank of staff sergeant and received an honorable discharge Nov. 2, 1945. Francis resided in Houlton throughout his lifetime. He was a grocery clerk at the A&P grocery store and eventually became a produce manager there, where he worked for many years until he chose retirement when the store closed. He also worked for the potato harvest as a potato picker, as well as on his family farm. Francis was a member of Saint Mary's of the Visitation Church, where he served on the Knights of Columbus Council for several years and as an usher for many years. Francis enjoyed his family, potato picking, berry picking, crossword puzzles and bowling. Francis is survived by two brothers, Eugene McMonigle of Houlton and James McMonigle of Marlboro, N.Y.; two sisters, Margaret Ochmanski of Miami and Mary Lucas of Los Angeles; several nieces, nephews and cousins. In addition to his parents, he was predeceased by three sisters, Mildred, Alice and Anna; and one brother, Louis. Friends may call 6-8 p.m. Sunday, Nov. 23, at Dunn Funeral Home. A Mass of Christian burial will be celebrated 10 a.m. Monday, Nov. 24, at Saint Mary of the Visitation Church. Interment will be at St. Mary's Cemetery.
