George Washington Adams was born December 2, 1848. He became a member of the New Bethel Baptist Church when he was seventeen years of age, during the pastorate of Rev James Smith. He attended Butler College in 1868 and 1869 when it was located on College Avenue. George was a prosperous farmer in Franklin Township. He was married to Mahala Shimer on January 15, 1873. She was the daughter of William and Elizabeth Shimer of Irvington. Mahala attended school at the Indianapolis Female Institute, Indianapolis. Her grandmother's farm, the O'Neal homestead, joined the Adams' homestead on the west, and George and Mahala spent all but a few years of their life at one of these two places. On December 4, 1940, the George Adams house that was the original O'Neal homestead, burned. Mahala was still living there and the house was one hundred and fifteen years old. Many Adams' treasures were burned.

The Ladies' Aid Society of the New Bethel Baptist Church was organized November 2, 1898 at the home of Mrs George Adams with twelve charter members and she was elected president. The couple always took an active part in their church. George Adams was deacon of the New Bethel Baptist Church for many years. George died January 21, 1929. Mahala was born August 30, 1851 and died in September, 1941. They are buried in Memorial Park Cemetery, 9350 East Washington Street, Indianapolis, Warren Township, Marion County, Indiana. Their children were: William H, Daniel, Mildred, Susan, Mary, Carrie, Henry and one child who died in infancy. All were born at New Bethel.
