Lola was born to George McHenry and Susannah Melvina Stout Payne. She had a twin sister, Oma. Lola married the widowed Joseph William Barlow on March 17, 1910. After residing for a short time in Todd, Tennessee, with son Joseph Stauffer ("Little Joe" who passed away at age 4), they moved to the Green Valley community of Ashe County.
Joe Barlow was a highly thought of lumber inspector for J. Walter Wright Lumber Company. He also worked with Lola maintaining the family farm. This changed, however, when he was seriously injured in a car accident and rendered unable to work the farm. At that time, Lola had to take over the difficult duties, assisted by @ 8yr old Jim. It was a very hard life, made even worse by the Depression.
God-fearing and full of humor, Lola helped bring her family through these difficulties and saw her three living children grow into fine adults. She passed away in 1958 at the home of her daughter, Margaret, in Bristol, Tennessee, after suffering a stroke.
