JAMES MONROE MANNON
James was the fourth child and first son of Samuel Rice Mannon, son of Aaron & Sally Scoot (Wharton) Mannon and his third wife, Elizabeth Caroline Leech, who was the daughter of Elinor (Irons) and Samuel Leech.

James and his older sister Rebecca Jane were both born in New Boston Township, Mercer County, IL before the family moved to Centerville, Appanoose County, Iowa where his father purchased a farm. The farm was actually located on the state line. Their home was located on the Iowa side, but the barn and woodpile were both on the Missouri side of the state line.

It was here that tragedy struck the family once again when his mother died on Sept 10, 1856 after being bitten by a rattle snake. She had been out gathering eggs when she reached into a nest above her head to feel around, not knowing a rattle snake was coiled up in the nest. She suffered for four days and during her suffering, gave birth her third child, but the snakes venom had been powerful enough that both his mother and her baby lost their lives. They were buried together in the same grave. His father, being widowed for a third time, was left to raise 3 year old James and his 6 year old sister Rebecca, on his own.

While still living on the farm, James' father met and courted his fourth wife, Amelia Ann Maple on the Missouri side of the state line in Putnam County. She was born Nov 24, 1837 in Virginia; the daughter of Margaret Elizabeth (Priest) and William Jacob Maple. His father and step mother were united in marriage on Aug 27, 1857.

To this union were born seven children; Samuel William b.1/28/1859, Aaron Franklin "Frank" b.12/11/1860, John Hartford b.3/19/1864, Elizabeth Caroline b.9/27/1866, Amelia Susan b.3/4/1870, Walter E b.2/12/1873 & d.2/15/1873, Clark Preston b.2/21/1873. They also had one older 1/2 sister, Sarah Ellen Mannon who was raised by their grand father Aaron Mannon and his second wife Miriam (Hubbard) Hill - Mannon after the death of her mother when she was only four months old.

James was first married to Ella May Antes on December 14, 1875. She was born May 23, 1858 in New York state. To this union was born four children; Addie Ella b.10/3/1876; Francis Samuel b.2/18/1880; James Monroe Jr b.11/7/1884 and Vie b.1/18/1888.

Ella died in Feb 1900 in Black Brook Wisconsin. After her death James married a second time to Mrs Eva Vail Henshaw on July 15, 1903.

James was a rancher all his life, living in Oregon and Idaho. He died on June 26, 1922 in Newport, Oregon.
